And it seems that when compared to other countries, the English are much worse in increasing their cars compared to other countries.
“Being an upgrade to a better car at a rental desk is a sure way to make your holiday a great start,” said Isabel Wiliams, head of customer insight at Rentalcars.com, who conducted the research.
“Comparing the findings of this survey with our customer data worldwide has revealed that Brits are not as fortunate as travelers from other countries – we want to find out why, and to see how we can empower them to be dissatisfied with the second best.”
So how can we improve our game? Rentalcars.com asks people who have set themselves up for their key tips in bagging a better car while on vacation.
Here are the top 6 ways to get free improvement:
1. Ask for a better car
True what they say – if you do not ask, you do not understand.
So if you prefer something bigger or better than a given car, there is nothing wrong with asking what else is available that day, whether there is an offer, or how many different car groups.
Do not be shy – you may be offered a more expensive car at no additional cost.
2. Bid upgrades
If you are told a better car is available but comes at an additional cost per day, why not put your bargaining skills to the test to see if you can lower the price a bit?
Counting staff may not expect you to receive their quotes directly, and most likely they have the freedom to negotiate.
Think in advance about the maximum you will enjoy, and then get the best car for your money.
3. Visit regularly
If you have a favorite vacation spot, it’s good to choose a single car rental provider when you order online and build a good relationship with the staff.
Car Rental Companies have a habit of rewarding their regular customers, so do not forget to remind staff if you rent with them before.
4. The right time
Car rental is all about supply and demand. If you arrive at the rental desk a little later, they may not have all the vehicles left in the parking lot.
This means there is a chance that they will run out of a particular model – if that’s what you ordered, you can use the opportunity to request an upgrade to the model they have.
It helps them, and you also benefit.
5. Be friendly at the table
Just as with flights and hotels – being nice goes a long way in the world of travel.
If you can manage a smile when you get to the table, you might create a day rental agency … and then they might get you into your possession.
6. Know your car group
Car rental comes in groups (or categories) – different people may prefer different brands or models that are equivalent in car rental terms because they are in the same group.
So even if it’s not technically upgraded, it might feel like if you can choose an alternative car for the same price.
In the past year, more than one in five Rentalcars.com customers received a free upgrade at the rental desk.
So whether it’s getting out of bed on the right side or putting on your lucky socks, do what you can to persuade the stars to harmonize.
