Best New Car Scent – Robert Weitz, certified microbial investigator and founder of the RTK Environmental Group, says the smell of the new car you smell is actually made of something called volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. A new car smell occurs when the various materials that make up your car “outgas” and release the VOC.
Materials used in new car interiors include polyurethane or polyester and various paints, plastics, and sealants. The VOC molecules released from these materials eventually evaporate, but initially, they are very harmful to humans, especially in confined spaces.
“There are many VOCs that cause cancer (carcinogens) and most will produce symptoms in many individuals including respiratory, headache, and joint and muscle pain. We’re all built differently and the VOC has a different effect on all of us, “Weitz said.
Because the smell of a new car fades as time passes, so does the VOC – but on warm days, the ingredients can start “outgas” again. One way to solve this problem is to keep your windows open as you can and not take a deep breath every time you get into your new car.
