Against Clio and 208, Volkswagen Golf is a wild-card choice, but very reasonable. £ 5,000 will buy a 1.2 liter TSI gasoline S in the form of Golf Mk6, wearing 10-plat 2010. However, Golf is the car of the next size bracket, with Renault Megane and Peugeot 308 its natural rivals.

The Clio Renault has always been a popular choice among young buyers – it is a stylish car with a fun personality. £ 5,000 will only secure the latest model examples, but previous generations offer more metal for the money. We found a well equipped Dynioque 1.2 Din din with 37,000 miles, plus cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and sat nav installed as standard.
It’s easy and fun to drive as well, while the 288-liter boot is quite extensive. On the minus side, 48.7mpg from 1.2 liters means it takes two other options for fuel economy and interior design is starting to look its age. The Renault Clio generation is not solid enough put together as some rivals, though, and electric gremlins can emerge. Low mileage cars are less prone to rattles.
Peugeot 208 – efficient choice
For: HDi diesel restore impressive fuel economy
Against: Suspension of the company, the cabin is not for all flavors
£ 5,000 will comfortably secure the Peugeot 208 13-plate, making it by far the latest car in our trio. 208 also offers a 1.4 liter HDi FAP diesel engine that will return up to 74.3mpg, along with 98g / km CO2 emissions that make it exempt from road taxes (although remember the example listed after 1 April 2017 faces an annual £ 140 fee). Remember that small diesel engines are not as efficient as alternate gasoline.
Access + trim level is quite cheap, with air conditioning and cruise control, while the interior design is modern and fun to look at; You will even find examples with the impressive i-Cockpit digital instrument cluster in our budget. However, not everyone gets the driving position of Peugeot 208. The power failure is unknown, especially with the infotainment system, but 208 is a solid car.
