Best Buy Car Stereos With Bluetooth – CarPlay is Apple’s answer to car infotainment systems. Run by your iPhone, CarPlay replaces the navigation controls, media, phone and messaging your car with iOS – and even includes Siri.

CarPlay also works with touch screens, buttons, knobs and calling your car, making navigation as intensive as in your iPhone and your own car system. But while CarPlay is mostly advertised as an option on new cars, there are several ways to bring CarPlay to your old vehicle by simply using the after-market option.

The head unit, or stack, shown here all includes Bluetooth. That means you can stream music to them from other devices, and make and receive hands-free calls. However, to run CarPlay, everything requires you to connect your iPhone with a USB cable. Wireless CarPlay does exist – but so far only the latest BMW 5-Series offers this feature.

Also, please note that Google launches Google Assistant for cars with Android Auto. With any luck, this will also include a third-party head unit, so you’ll be able to tell the Assistant to turn on the lights and heat up as you drive down the street.

Here’s everything you need to know about adding CarPlay to your car, and some of the best options available to buy right now.

One or two DIN?

DIN stands for the German phrase Dietch Normen Industry, and refers to the standard size of stereo car makers the country started installing in the 1980s. DIN refers to the stereo – also known as the head unit – measuring two inches by eight inches. This is the size of a single DIN unit, while double DINs have the same width, but four inches instead of two.

Obviously, this simplicity reminds us of a time when the interior and dash of the car were simpler and more oblique than they exist today. This design may not win many design awards. But that means older vehicles with bad stereos can be upgraded to the latest Silicon Valley on offer.

The Apple CarPlay system – which in most cases also comes with Android Auto – tends to double DIM sized. However some single DIN systems exist where the slide show exits from where the CD slot will and flips up.

Quick warning: Car head unit makers are really bad at naming their products, so you have to forgive us for repeating their meaningless titles inspired by the soup.

JVC KW-V830BT – $ 429.99

See what we mean about those names? However, this dual DIN unit by JVC currently costs $ 429.99 – down from a retail price of $ 600 – and features a 6.8 inch touchscreen, satellite radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There is also an AM / FM radio tuner, an additional 3.5mm input and a USB port for connecting different media devices. Above the screen there is a slot for CD and DVD.

Pioneer AVIC-8201NEX – $ 825

Yes, Pioneer double-DIN is much more expensive than most of its competitors, but listen to us. Not only has a seven inch touch screen, CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio and Bluetooth. But it also comes with rear rear camera.

You may need to hire a professional to install the camera, but it will make your car feel like just leaving the dealer. Like a modern car, the camera overlays a line on its video feed to help you neatly park in the bay or on the edge of the sidewalk. This unit also comes with its own satellite navigation system, if you do not want to use Apple Maps.

Pioneer AVH-3300NEX – $ 460

This single DIN unit from Pioneer is a more compact head unit with a touchable seven-inch touchscreen. There’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, as well as Bluetooth to stream music to your stereo from other devices. The user interface is customizable, and there is a CD slot for CD and DVD, plus satellite radio and USB port.

Sony XAV-AX100 – $ 398

Return to dual DIN settings, and this 6.4 inch Sony head unit. It may offer slightly less screen real estate than its rivals, but it can send more power to your car speakers. It offers CarPlay and Android Auto, and has a Bluetooth connection for streaming and phone calls. However, as with all the major units featured in this article, your smartphone must be connected to a USB port to run CarPlay.

Although the camera is not included in the box, this Sony unit can be connected to a third-party reversal camera if you have already installed it, or want to buy it in the future.
