For years, American drivers were not moved by a combination of power and efficiency of diesel, while tens of millions of European buyers snatched them for everything from VW Golf to limos Mercedes S-class.

By 2018, almost every European car manufacturer wipes out gradually as countries and cities across the continent prepare to ban it. At the same time, Detroit 3 is launching a new generation of diesel engines – at enormous prices over the sexy V8 – to drive their most popular and profitable vehicles.

Being the first of a new generation of diesel pickups sold does not make the F-150 diesel look like a bargain, because it is not. Diesel buyers are a special kind, happy to pay extra for a machine that combines a good fuel economy with a large towing capacity. The Ford 250-hp 3.0L V6 diesel is an option $ 4,995 on the F-150 XLT which is the basic model, an additional $ 4,000 on the line of the Lariat and adds $ 3,000 to the tab for a luxury pickup like King Ranch I tested.
Diesel, built by Ford at the factory in England, is the sixth engine in the F-150 lineup today. It is paired with Ford’s smooth and precise 10-speed automatic transmission and is available with rear or rear wheel drive.
Ford expects to account for about 5 percent of F-150 sales. That is a small part, but the number becomes meaningful when you talk about the best-selling vehicle in America. Ford will probably sell more F-150 diesel than Chevy sells Corvette.
Currently, the only light-duty pickup truck with diesel is the 2018 Ram 1500, available in small quantities after being hung while the EPA checks its engine control, supplied by the same company that makes control for the cheating Volkswagens that started the diesel downfall.
Next year, the F-150 diesel gets a more meaningful rivalry in all new dies in the new Chevy Silverado, and the Ram carryover diesel in their new 15,000 ’19 pickup.
Another competitor – but just sort of, because they do not have diesel – will be a full pickup of Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra. Some buyers may also consider 5.0L V8 diesel version of Nissan’s medium-sized Titan XD larger duty.
I tested King Ranch Super Crew 4×4 with four doors, seating for five people, ranch-style leather and badging and more. It sticks to $ 64,805, excluding destination costs.
It’s hard to compare it to other pickups until Ram and Chevy have the same modern diesel engine available. It may be competitive, but in the upper classes, because the F-150 is the sales leader.

The F-150 diesel does not have the largest towing capacity among full-size pickups, or even on the F-150 line, but a combination of 11,400 lbs, strong torque for good towing and decent fuel economy – up to 30 mpg on the road highway in the EPA test – give a series of unique attributes that catnip like to most buyers with the right to drag horses, boats and campers. Ford also expects to sell some F-150 diesel as a direct work truck.
Diesel is quiet and refined, thanks to the latest improvements to the engine family, which Ford has built in Britain for years, and that also includes the diesel that drives the luxury Land Rover SUV. The extra sound insulation under the hood helps ensure that the spacious F-150 passenger cabin may not hear more engine noise than the gasoline engine.
The 4×4 King Ranch cabin equipped with the luxury I tested could attract 10,100 pounds. It’s 890 bigger than the 2.099 Ram 1500 diesel maximum landing capacity, and a whopping 1,520 pounds higher than the four doors that are loaded.
The King Ranch is a luxurious and comfortable vehicle, with the type of passenger space – especially the rear legroom and headroom – generally associated with limos.
It’s available with the latest driver help feature and has nice and easy-to-use controls and voice recognition for features like audio, navigation, and smartphones.
The start stop diesel, which turns off the engine when it stops at a traffic light or traffic, is very visible. The vibrations can be felt by everyone in the cabin when the engine revives to continue driving.
The F-150 is very well designed for maneuverability and driving ability, but nothing disguises the fact that the 4×4 F-150 cabin is a great vehicle. It meets the residential street and turns the search for a downtown parking lot into a worthy search of the recent “Amazing Race” episode in Detroit.
The option price for diesel is competitive with what Ram costs for the less powerful 3.0L V6 diesel, but still, $ 3,000- $ 4,995 is a big demand. People who spend a lot of time pulling long distances may be interested in the F-150 diesel but it is not possible to turn many new owners into diesel.

More importantly, the Ford engine produces 440 pound-feet of torque from just 1,750 rpm, a type of direct force that makes it easy to pull the trailer out of the muddy enclosure. Fiat Chrysler V6 produces 420 pound-feet at 2,000 rpm, good performance but may be a real difference when you’re trying to reach highway speeds in the driveway while pulling the fifth wheel camper.
EPA tariffs are the most efficient F-150 diesel at 22 mpg in the city, 30 on the highway and 25 combined. It scored 20/25/22 at the larger and fully equipped King Ranch 4×4 I.
