Driving in rainy weather is never ideal for even experienced drivers. Rainy conditions always increase the chance for an accident to occur. The safest thing to do is to stay off the roads until the rain passes, but if you absolutely have to leave the house here are some tips to help you get to your destination a little more safe. Tires: For starters you should always check your tire pressure from time to time in the rainier seasons. The PSI will fluctuate with the cooling and heating of the temperature. Check the tread for balding and even wear. Bald tires slide very easy on wet concrete. It’s recommended that your tires be balanced every 5,000 miles or if your steering wheel vibrates at high speeds. As for getting your tires rotated it recommended you do this at the same time the tires get balanced or every 5,000 miles, signs they are due for a rotation is uneven wear and bald spots. Good tires are the most essential component to safe driving in any weather.

Visibility: Make sure your wipers are in good condition for optimal visibility, and the fluid levels are where they should be. Make sure your windshield is clean and clear of any fog, turn on your defroster or crack a window for optimal ventilation. Be sure both headlights are working properly as well as blinkers and flashers. If it becomes hard to see the vehicle in front of you, turn on your flashers so the car behind you can see you.

Caution: SLOW DOWN. Stay alert, keep both hands on the steering wheel and be sure to watch all mirrors carefully. Watch the road closely for standing water and other vehicles splashing water on your windshield. Hydroplaning is very easy to do and happens in the blink of an eye. Avoid braking hard and tailgating other vehicles in a storm. If you do hydroplane calmly let off the gas and steer the direction you need to go. DO NOT press hard on the brake or jerk the steering wheel. If conditions get too ugly pull over and wait for it to pass, that’s the smartest thing to do.

Safety is our number one concern and hopefully these tips help you stay safe during these rainy months. Let’s all slow down and be cautious to keep the roads clear of accidents. Jeff Smith Towing will be on stand by to help you in your emergency.
